Biography
Jerome Kern was an American composer of musical theatre and film scores. Born in Manhattan, he wrote music for over 100 stage works and numerous Hollywood films across a career spanning more than four decades.
His best-known stage work is the 1927 musical Show Boat, with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Film credits include the score for Swing Time (1936), which featured songs such as "A Fine Romance" and the Academy Award-winning "The Way You Look Tonight", both with lyrics by Dorothy Fields. Songs from his shows, including those from Show Boat, have been adapted into films in 1936 and 1951.
Kern collaborated with lyricists including Hammerstein, Otto Harbach, Dorothy Fields and Johnny Mercer. He died in 1945.
