Biography
Jerzy Skarżyński (16 December 1924 – 7 January 2004) was a Polish painter, stage and film scenographer, illustrator and educator. Born and died in Kraków, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and the Kraków University of Technology, both completed in 1948. He worked as a scenographer at Kraków’s Groteska Puppet Theatre from 1948 to 1958 and subsequently at the Stary Teatr.
Skarżyński designed production and costumes, often with his wife Lidia Skarżyńska, for several films directed by Wojciech Jerzy Has. These include The Saragossa Manuscript (1965), where he is credited with both production design and costume design, and The Hourglass Sanatorium (1973). He was a member of the II Grupa Krakowska and created posters, book illustrations and comics.
