Biography
Jiří Šust was a Czech composer of film music. Born in Prague in 1919, he studied piano and composition in Moscow and at the Prague State Conservatory. He began composing for short films and advertisements in the 1940s and went on to score more than eighty feature films as well as numerous television productions and shorts.
Šust is best known for his scores for Daisies (1966) and Closely Watched Trains (1966). He maintained a long collaboration with director Jiří Menzel, composing music for eleven of his films over nearly thirty years, including Larks on a String (1969), Secluded, Near Woods (1976), Cutting It Short (1981) and My Sweet Little Village (1985). He also worked with Věra Chytilová and others in the Czechoslovak New Wave. Šust died in Prague in 1995.
