Biography
Joan Chandler (born Joan Imel Cheeseman) was an American actress. She was born on 24 August 1923 in Butler, Pennsylvania, and died on 11 May 1979 in New York City. She studied at Bennington College and trained in ballet, touring with a ballet company before turning to acting. A founding member of the Actors Studio, she appeared on stage, in film and on television from the mid-1940s to around 1960.
Chandler made her film debut in Humoresque (1946) as Gina Romney and played Janet Walker in Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope (1948). She appeared in a small number of other films, including Dragstrip Riot (1958). On Broadway she performed in The Late George Apley (1944), Where’s Charley? (replacement, 1948–1950), The Lady from the Sea (1950), My 3 Angels (1953) and The Disenchanted (replacement, 1958–1959). She also worked in television, including episodes of Studio One and The Philco Television Playhouse. She was married twice, first to playwright David McKay and later to Dr Charles C. Hogan; both marriages ended in divorce.
