Biography
João Atala is a Brazilian cinematographer born in Rio de Janeiro. He studied film in Rio de Janeiro and San Francisco, and has worked as a director of photography for over fifteen years.
He served as director of photography or head of cinematography on the documentaries The Edge of Democracy (2019) and Apocalypse in the Tropics (2025), both directed by Petra Costa, as well as on Nosso Sonho (2023). His other credits include feature films and shorts such as Medusa (2021) and Homem Onça (2021).
