Biography
Joe Layton (3 May 1931 – 5 May 1994) was an American choreographer, director and producer. Born Joseph Lichtman in Brooklyn, New York, he began his career as a dancer before concentrating on musical staging. He won Tony Awards for Best Choreography for the Broadway productions No Strings (1962) and George M! (1968), and an Emmy Award for his work on the Barbra Streisand television special My Name Is Barbra (1965).
Layton directed and produced numerous television specials and collaborated on Broadway shows including Barnum. In film, he was executive producer and creator of the musical sequences for Annie (1982), and directed the concert film Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip (1982). He also contributed choreography to Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) and For the Boys (1991).
