Biography
John Alexander was an American stage, film and television actor. Born in Newport, Kentucky, he began his career as a child on stage and appeared on Broadway from 1917. His work spanned more than fifty years, with a long association with the theatre.
He is best known for playing Teddy Brewster in the 1941 Broadway production of Arsenic and Old Lace and reprising the role in the 1944 film adaptation. Other film roles include Steve Edwards in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945), Jack Riker in Winchester '73 (1950) and Howard Shipley in The Marrying Kind (1952). He also appeared in television series during the 1950s and 1960s.
Alexander was married to actress Genevieve Hamper from 1928 until her death in 1971. He died in New York City in 1982.
