Biography

John Beug was an American film and television producer and music industry executive. Born in Chicago in 1947, he attended Northwestern University, where he worked as a talent booker, later booking acts for Chicago venues. He moved to Los Angeles to join producer Lou Adler’s Ode Records and contributed to the opening of the Roxy nightclub on the Sunset Strip and the production of Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke (1978).

Beug served as head of creative services at Warner Bros. Records from 1986, overseeing music videos and long-form releases. His producing credits include the documentary When You’re Strange (2009), about the Doors, for which he shared a Grammy Award; Tom Petty: Runnin’ Down a Dream (2007); and Concert for George (2002). He also produced episodes of Great Performances and won a Primetime Emmy for Eric Clapton: Crossroads Guitar Festival (2007). Beug died on 15 October 2022 in Northern California.
