Biography
John Carroll (born Julian La Faye, 17 July 1906 – 24 April 1979) was an American actor and singer. He performed small roles under his birth name before adopting the name John Carroll in Hi, Gaucho! (1935). He appeared in Westerns in the 1930s, including as Zorro in the serial Zorro Rides Again (1937).
Carroll played Gent Shelton in Only Angels Have Wings (1939). He was the male lead in the Marx Brothers comedy Go West (1940) and played Woody Jason in Flying Tigers (1942). During the Second World War he served as a U.S. Army Air Corps pilot in North Africa, breaking his back in a crash before resuming his career. Later roles included Tate Kimbrough in Decision at Sundown (1957) and Lou Martin in The Other Side of the Wind (2018). His final screen appearance was in Ride in a Pink Car (1974).
