Biography
John Carter (1922–2018) was an American film editor. He began his career in television, rising through the ranks at CBS on The Ed Sullivan Show and becoming the first African-American film editor employed by network television in New York. For the final four of his twelve years there, he served as supervising film editor for the documentary unit Eye on New York.
In 1968 Carter left CBS to establish his own company, John Carter Associates. His feature credits include Paper Lion (1968), King: A Filmed Record…Montgomery to Memphis (1970), Taking Off (1971) — for which he received a BAFTA nomination — and The Heartbreak Kid (1972). He was the first African-American member of the American Cinema Editors and edited more than fifty feature films over his career, among them Men of Honor (2000), Friday (1995) and Barbershop (2002).
