Biography
John Conte was an American actor who worked in film, television and on stage. Born in Palmer, Massachusetts, he moved to Los Angeles as a child and trained at the Pasadena Playhouse after high school. He began in radio before appearing on Broadway in musicals including Allegro (1947) and Carousel (1945 revival and 1954).
His film roles include Prince Ramo in Lost in a Harem (1944) and Drunky in The Man with the Golden Arm (1955). He appeared in guest roles on Perry Mason (1960–1965) and played Ed Ellis in The Carpetbaggers (1964). Conte hosted Matinee Theater and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. In the 1960s he largely retired from acting and co-founded the television station KMIR-TV in Palm Desert, California, with his third wife.
