Biography
John Gottowt, born Isidor Gesang, was an Austrian actor, stage director and film director active in theatre and silent cinema.
After training in Vienna he joined the Deutsches Theater in Berlin in 1905, working with Max Reinhardt. He appeared in numerous films, including The Student of Prague (1913) as Scapinelli, Genuine (1920), Algol (1920) and Waxworks (1924). He played Professor Bulwer in F. W. Murnau’s Nosferatu (1922).
As a Jew he was banned from professional work in 1933. After time in Denmark he moved to Poland, where he was murdered by an SS officer in Wieliczka in 1942 while in hiding.
