Huang Jingyu brings physical credibility and a relaxed delivery to action roles. We value those qualities, but Operation Red Sea gives him too little character to play once he has convinced us he belongs in the fighting.
Fi1m perspective
In Operation Red Sea (2018), Huang Jingyu plays the sniper Gu Shun with the physical credibility the assignment needs. The problem comes when the film needs us to care about him as well as believe he can do the job. We admired the action but struggled to care about Gu Shun, because the screenplay gives him so little individual detail. Huang helps make the fighting convincing; he has much less chance to establish a person we might remember once it stops.
His acting debut was as Gu Hai in the web drama Addicted (2016), before Operation Red Sea took him into mainstream military action. Police and rescue projects followed, including The Thunder (2019) and Bright Eyes in the Dark (2023), making repeated use of his build and athletic background. Yet the work is not confined to uniforms: Moonshine and Valentine (2018) is a romance and fantasy drama. Han Han's racing comedy Pegasus (2019) gave him Lin Zhendong, a role he returned to in Pegasus 2 (2024).
Huang has described playing Gu Hai as close to playing himself. He said he spoke in his own way rather than sticking to the words, because the character's personality was so close to his own. His relaxed delivery makes competence look ordinary rather than performed for our benefit. That ease is worth preserving, but it need not mean casting him in the same sort of part indefinitely.
Dante Lam's Operation Red Sea is the caution here, leaving Huang, Zhang Yi and Du Jiang to carry our interest through insistent fighting. The screenplay by Eric Lin Ming-Chie, Chen Zhuzhu and Feng Ji, with Lam also credited as writer, gives their faintly drawn characters too little help. That is not a failure we would lay solely at Huang's feet. Nor would we mistake a convincing sniper for a full account of what he can do. For another action role, we would want a script that gives him more to do between the fights.
