Biography
José Luis Cuerda was a Spanish filmmaker who worked as a director, screenwriter and producer. Born in Albacete, he began his career in television after leaving law studies, joining Televisión Española in 1969 where he made reports and documentaries for the news services and later directed cultural programmes.
He directed his first feature film, Pares y nones, in 1982. His subsequent work included El bosque animado (1987), Amanece, que no es poco (1989) and La lengua de las mariposas (1999). Cuerda also produced the early films of Alejandro Amenábar, including Tesis (1996), Abre los ojos (1997) and The Others (2001). He received four Goya Awards.
