Biography
Josef Somr was a Czech actor. He trained at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno, graduating in 1956. He began his career in regional theatres before joining the Drama Club in Prague, where he worked with directors including Jiří Menzel.
Somr made his film debut in Accused (1964) and gained prominence as train dispatcher Hubička in Closely Watched Trains (1966). He later played Ludvík Jahn in The Joke (1969). His other notable screen roles include appearances in The Valley of the Bees (1968) and the How the World Is Losing Poets series. He received the Medal of Merit in 2005, the Czech Lion Award for Unique Contribution to Czech Film in 2012, and a Thalia lifetime achievement award for theatre work in 2014. Somr died on 16 October 2022.
