Biography
Josefina Díaz de Artigas, also credited as Josefina Díaz and Pepita Díaz, was an Argentine actress who worked primarily in Spain. Born in Argentina in 1891, she trained with the company of María Guerrero and Fernando Díaz de Mendoza and became one of the leading theatre actresses of the early twentieth century.
She formed her own company with her husband, Santiago Artigas, and appeared in premieres of works by Jacinto Benavente, the Álvarez Quintero brothers, Federico García Lorca (including Bodas de sangre), Alejandro Casona and others. Her film appearances were fewer, among them La prima Angélica (1974) and Cría cuervos (1976), both directed by Carlos Saura, in which she played the grandmother.
She died in Madrid in 1976.
