Biography
Joseph Charlton is a British writer for television, theatre and film. He grew up outside Newcastle and worked as a journalist from 2012 to 2017, primarily at The Independent, before turning to writing full time.
His theatre credits include the plays Brilliant Jerks (2018 Vault Festival, later revived) and Anna X (2019 Vault Festival; West End transfer to the Harold Pinter Theatre in 2021). The latter received the Origins Outstanding New Work Award. He has also written Anniversary, published in Arete magazine in 2017.
On television he has written episodes of the BBC/HBO series Industry (from season 2) and served as consulting producer on later seasons. His film work includes the screenplay for A Spy By Nature, directed by Kevin Macdonald with Paul Mescal attached to star. He has been selected for the BBC Drama Room and BBC TV Drama Writers’ Programme schemes.
