Biography
Joseph Strick (1923–2010) was an American director, producer and screenwriter. Born in Braddock, Pennsylvania, he served as a cameraman in the US Army Air Forces during the Second World War. After the war he began his career with the short documentary Muscle Beach (1948), co-directed with Irving Lerner.
Strick directed and produced literary adaptations including The Balcony (1963), Ulysses (1967), Tropic of Cancer (1970) and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1977). He produced the experimental documentary The Savage Eye (1960) and the feature Never Cry Wolf (1983). His short documentary Interviews with My Lai Veterans (1970) won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject. He also directed for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.
