Josh Radnor gives idealistic men enough warmth to keep us listening when they explain themselves. We like his steadiness in an ensemble, though scripts that demand sympathy for him can make that patience wear thin.

Josh Radnor's Ted Mosby wants his romantic disappointments to matter, and Radnor makes it possible to care without quite persuading us to worry. In How I Met Your Mother (2005), he is an agreeable centre for a romantic sitcom that sometimes mistakes persistence for importance. We warmed to him, then felt our patience slipping whenever the writing insisted on the significance of Ted's search for love. The distinction matters, because Radnor has to keep this man sympathetic while the script keeps asking for sympathy on his behalf. His warmth does useful work, even when the writing gives it too much to do.
Beside him, Jason Segel's Marshall Eriksen and Alyson Hannigan's Lily Aldrin have a more relaxed way of being good company. Neil Patrick Harris is the cast's strongest reason to stay, but Radnor's quieter contribution matters. He does not need to compete with that liveliness to be useful; his steadiness gives the larger personalities space. The series is easier company when it lets him belong to this group instead of repeatedly asking us to put his romantic life first.
He wrote and directed Happythankyoumoreplease (2010) and Liberal Arts (2012), taking a leading role in each. That move fits an actor repeatedly drawn to idealistic men trying to understand their relationships. His films have been criticised for sentimentality, a risk we recognise from the sitcom's insistence on Ted's feelings. Yet Liberal Arts also gives other actors emotionally specific parts, suggesting a useful instinct beyond finding material for himself. We would like to see more of that generosity, rather than further reassurance that the romantic lead means well.
Later ensemble work includes Lonny Flash in Hunters (2020), giving him work beyond the central romantic lead. Our preference remains for Radnor sharing the attention, without having to justify his character's importance. He can supply steadiness without flattening the comedy around him, and How I Met Your Mother gives that quality plenty of use. Start there for the ensemble, and allow Ted rather less importance than Ted would like.

Josh Radnor is an American actor and filmmaker. He is known for portraying Ted Mosby on the CBS series How I Met Your Mother (2005–2014).
Radnor was born in Columbus, Ohio, and trained at Kenyon College and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He wrote, directed and starred in the films Happythankyoumoreplease (2010) and Liberal Arts (2012). His other credits include appearances in Hunters (2020) as Lonny Flash, Mercy Street (2016–2017) and stage productions such as Disgraced (2014).
