Biography
Joya McCrory is an American television writer and producer. A Detroit native and University of Michigan graduate, she received a Summer Hopwood fiction award for her short stories. She later studied screenwriting at UCLA and worked in human resources before pursuing writing full time.
McCrory was accepted into the Warner Bros. Television Writers Workshop in 2021. This led to her joining the writers’ room on the ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary. She has contributed as a staff writer, story editor and executive story editor, and has written episodes including “Step Class” (2022), “Egg Drop” (2022), “Mural Arts” (2023), “Rally” (2025) and “No Phones” (2025). She has also served as co-producer on the series.
As part of the Abbott Elementary writing team, McCrory shared in an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series and received further nominations, including for the Writers Guild of America Awards.
