Biography
Julian Chagrin (also credited as Julian Joy-Chagrin) is a British-Israeli actor and mime artist. Born on 22 February 1940 in London, he is the son of composer and conductor Francis Chagrin. He trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and studied pantomime with Jacques Lecoq in Paris.
Chagrin is known for playing one of the tennis-playing mimes in Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up (1966). His other screen credits include an episode of The Avengers (1961) as Jennings, Bill the Lizard in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1972), and roles in Danger Route (1967), The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom (1968) and Alfred the Great (1969). With his then-wife Claude Chagrin he made the short films The Concert (1974) and The Morning Spider (1976), both nominated for Academy Awards. He is also recognised for his long-running role as the ‘secret lemonade drinker’ in a series of R. White’s lemonade television advertisements in the 1970s.
Since 1976 Chagrin has lived in Israel, where he has worked in television comedy, including the series The Orchestra. He is married to actress and comedian Rolanda Chagrin.
