Biography
Julie Harris was an American actress. She made her Broadway debut in 1945 and received five Tony Awards for Best Actress in a Play for her performances in I Am a Camera (1952), The Lark (1956), Forty Carats (1969), The Last of Mrs Lincoln (1973) and The Belle of Amherst (1977).
Harris appeared in films including East of Eden (1955), The Haunting (1963) as Eleanor Lance, Reflections in a Golden Eye (1967) and Gorillas in the Mist (1988). She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Member of the Wedding (1952). Her television work included roles in Columbo and Knots Landing, and she received three Primetime Emmy Awards.
She was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1979 and received the National Medal of Arts in 1994 and a Special Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 2002.
