Biography
Juliet Berto was a French actress, director and screenwriter. Born Annie Lucienne Marie Louise Jamet on 16 January 1947 in Grenoble, she made her screen debut in Jean-Luc Godard’s 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her (1967) and appeared in several of his other films, including La Chinoise (1967) and Weekend (1967).
She became closely associated with Jacques Rivette, starring as Céline in Céline and Julie Go Boating (1974) and in Out 1 (1971). In the 1980s she turned to directing and screenwriting; her film Cap Canaille (1983), co-directed with Jean-Henri Roger, was selected for the Berlin International Film Festival. She served on the jury at the 1987 Berlin festival.
Berto died of cancer on 10 January 1990 in Breux-Jouy, aged 42.
