Biography
June Mathis was an American screenwriter and the first woman to head a script department at Metro (later MGM). Born June Beulah Hughes, she adopted her stepfather’s surname and began her career as a stage and vaudeville actress before moving into scenario writing around 1917–1918.
She wrote the screenplay for The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921), which helped launch Rudolph Valentino, and contributed to other Valentino films including Blood and Sand (1922). Mathis also worked on The Saphead (1920) and received screenplay credit on Greed (1924). She later provided the adaptation for Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925).
Mathis died in New York on 26 July 1927.
