Biography
Karen Hao is an American journalist and author specialising in artificial intelligence, technology ethics and the social impact of AI. She has reported for MIT Technology Review, where she was senior AI editor, The Wall Street Journal and The Atlantic, and previously worked as a tech reporter and data scientist at Quartz.
Hao wrote the 2025 book Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman’s OpenAI, which became a New York Times bestseller. She appeared as herself, credited as AI Reporter, in the 2026 documentary The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist.
