Biography
Karl Etlinger, also credited as Karl Franz Etlinger, was an Austrian-born German actor. Born in Vienna on 16 October 1879, he trained under Joseph Lewinsky and began his stage career in 1898, later specialising in Austrian folk plays by Johann Nestroy and Ferdinand Raimund while working in theatres including Berlin.
Etlinger appeared in more than 110 films between 1914 and 1946, mostly in supporting roles. His credits include uncredited parts in F. W. Murnau’s Nosferatu (1922) and G. W. Pabst’s The Joyless Street (1925), as well as the defense attorney in Pabst’s Pandora’s Box (1929) and Gallison in One Night at the Grand Hotel (1931). He also worked briefly in Hollywood in the early 1930s and contributed as a screenwriter.
