Biography
Karl Vollmöller (also spelled Vollmoeller) was a German playwright and screenwriter. Born in Stuttgart in 1878, he studied classical philology, art and painting at the universities of Berlin and Paris. He began writing plays after the death of his mother in 1894 and collaborated extensively with theatre director Max Reinhardt.
Vollmöller is best known for the religious spectacle-pantomime Das Mirakel (The Miracle, 1911), written with Reinhardt, and for his contributions to the screenplay of The Blue Angel (1930), directed by Josef von Sternberg. He also worked on films including Lady of the Pavements (1929) and provided uncredited contributions to The Shanghai Gesture (1941). He was married to actress Norina Gilli (Maria Carmi) from 1904 to 1920.
With the rise of the National Socialists, Vollmöller left Germany and lived in Italy, France and the United States. He died in Los Angeles in 1948.
