Biography
Katharina Thalbach is a German actress and stage director. Born on 19 January 1954 in East Berlin, she comes from a theatrical family; her mother was actress Sabine Thalbach and her father director Benno Besson. She began performing as a child and appeared in productions at the Berliner Ensemble and Volksbühne Berlin before moving to West Berlin in 1976.
Thalbach gained international recognition for her role as Maria Matzerath in Volker Schlöndorff’s The Tin Drum (1979). She later appeared in Sophie's Choice (1982) and has worked extensively in German film and television, including roles in Ruby Red (2013), Sapphire Blue (2014) and Emerald Green (2016). She has also directed theatre and opera productions, such as Macbeth.
Her daughter Anna Thalbach is also an actress.
