Biography
Keiichi Uraoka (浦岡敬一) was a Japanese film editor. He joined the Shochiku studio in 1948 and trained under editor Yoshikazu Hamamura, serving as an assistant on films by Yasujirō Ozu. He made his debut as lead editor on Masaki Kobayashi’s The Human Condition (1959).
After leaving Shochiku in 1969, Uraoka worked freelance on numerous films, including several by Nagisa Ōshima such as In the Realm of the Senses (1976) and Empire of Passion (1978), as well as Vengeance Is Mine (1979) and Death by Hanging (1968). In 1988 he received the Japan Academy Prize for Excellent Editing for Tokyo: The Last Megalopolis and Oracion. He helped establish the Japan Film Editors Association and served as its first chairman, and taught at the Japan Film School. The Japan Film Critics Award later named its editing prize in his honour.
