Biography

Kirill Serebrennikov is a Russian stage and film director. Born on 7 September 1969 in Rostov-on-Don, he graduated from Rostov State University with a degree in physics in 1992 and began directing theatre productions in 1994 without formal training in the field.

He has directed extensively in Moscow theatres, including the Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre, and served as artistic director of the Gogol Center from 2012 to 2021. His opera and ballet productions have been staged at the Bolshoi Theatre, Mariinsky Theatre, and venues in Germany and elsewhere.

Serebrennikov’s feature films include Playing the Victim (2006), The Student (2016), Leto (2018), Petrov’s Flu (2021), Tchaikovsky’s Wife (2022) and Limonov: The Ballad (2024), on which he also received a screenplay credit. His work has screened at Cannes, Locarno, Rome and other festivals.
