Biography

Klaus Löwitsch (8 April 1936 – 3 December 2002) was a German-Austrian actor. Born in Berlin, he grew up in Vienna, where he trained as a dancer at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts and studied acting at the Max Reinhardt Seminar. He made his stage debut in the musical Kiss Me, Kate at the Vienna Volksoper in 1955 and later appeared in leading theatre roles across German-speaking countries.

Löwitsch worked extensively with Rainer Werner Fassbinder in the 1970s, including roles in The Merchant of Four Seasons (1972), World on a Wire (1973) and The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979). His international film credits include The Odessa File (1974), Cross of Iron (1977) and Firefox (1982). In Germany he was best known for his long-running title role in the ARD television series Peter Strohm (1989–1996), which he also directed.
