Biography
Klaus Mann was a German writer, essayist and novelist. Born in Munich in 1906, he was the son of Thomas Mann and nephew of Heinrich Mann. He began publishing in the mid-1920s and became known for works exploring youth, sexuality and social themes before going into exile after the Nazi rise to power.
Mann emigrated to the United States and served in the US Army during the Second World War, including time in Italy. He contributed to the story and screenplay for Roberto Rossellini's Paisan (1946). His best-known novel, Mephisto (1936), was adapted into a film of the same name in 1981. He died in Cannes in 1949.
