Biography
Konstantin Stanislavski was a Russian actor, director and theatre practitioner. Born Konstantin Sergeyevich Alekseyev in Moscow on 17 January 1863 (New Style), he adopted his stage name in 1885. He co-founded the Moscow Art Theatre with Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko in 1898.
Stanislavski developed an influential system of actor training that emphasised psychological realism. He performed and directed numerous productions, including premieres of Chekhov plays, and his methods were later disseminated internationally by his students. He died in Moscow on 7 August 1938.
