Biography
Ladislav Grosman (1921–1981) was a Slovak novelist and screenwriter. He is best known as the author of the novella The Shop on Main Street (Obchod na korze), which he adapted into the screenplay for the 1965 film of the same name, directed by Ján Kadár and Elmar Klos. The film, which depicts Jewish life in Slovakia during the Second World War, won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Born in Humenné, Grosman published an earlier short story, 'The Trap', in 1962 that formed the basis for the novella and screenplay. He collaborated with the directors on the shooting script. After emigrating to Israel in 1968, he taught Slavic literature and creative writing at Bar-Ilan University near Tel Aviv, later becoming a full professor, and also taught screenwriting at Tel Aviv University.
