Biography
Lai Pan, also credited as Yuk Mok Pok or Yeuk-muk Pok, was a Hong Kong production designer, art director and costume designer. He began his career as a still photographer on Hong Kong New Wave films before moving into art direction with Love in a Fallen City (1984).
He is known for his collaborations with director Stanley Kwan on Rouge (1987), Center Stage (1991) and Red Rose White Rose (1994), and for his work on Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution (2007), where he served as both production designer and costume designer. He also worked with Joan Chen on Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl (1998). Pan Lai received multiple Golden Horse and Hong Kong Film Awards, and a BAFTA nomination for Best Costume Design. He died in Beijing on 25 December 2024.
