Biography
Larisa Shepitko was a Soviet film director and screenwriter. Born in 1938 in Artyomovsk, Ukrainian SSR, she studied at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow under Alexander Dovzhenko.
Her early features include Heat (1963), her diploma film, and Wings (1966). She directed and co-wrote her final film, The Ascent (1977), which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Shepitko died in a car accident in 1979 while scouting locations for a subsequent project. She was married to filmmaker Elem Klimov.
