Biography
Lau Kar-leung (also credited as Liu Chia-liang) was a Hong Kong director, actor, fight choreographer and martial artist. Born on 28 July 1934 in Guangdong, he trained in Hung Gar kung fu from childhood under his father Lau Cham, part of a lineage tracing to Wong Fei-hung. He entered the film industry in the 1950s as a stuntman and became a leading action choreographer at Shaw Brothers Studio before directing from the mid-1970s.
He is best known for directing martial arts films at Shaw Brothers in the 1970s and 1980s, including The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978), Heroes of the East (1978), Dirty Ho (1979), Return to the 36th Chamber (1980), The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter (1984) and Martial Arts of Shaolin (1986). Later credits include directing The Legend of Drunken Master (1994). Lau died on 25 June 2013.
