Biography
Launy Grøndahl (1886–1960) was a Danish composer and conductor. He began violin studies at the age of eight and joined the orchestra of the Casino Theatre in Copenhagen at thirteen. He later studied composition with Ludolf Nielsen and Axel Gade.
Grøndahl was principal conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra (originally the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra) from its founding in 1925 until 1956. He is best known for his Trombone Concerto (1924) and for composing the original score for Benjamin Christensen’s silent film Häxan (1922). He also made pioneering recordings of Carl Nielsen’s symphonies.
