Biography
Leo Brouwer is a Cuban composer, classical guitarist and conductor. Born in Havana in 1939, he studied composition at the Juilliard School and Hartt College of Music before returning to Cuba, where he became director of the music department at the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC).
He has written scores for more than sixty films, including several by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea such as Death of a Bureaucrat (1966) and Memories of Underdevelopment (1968). His international credits include Like Water for Chocolate (1992). Brouwer is also noted for his extensive body of work for solo guitar and orchestra.
