Biography
Leonid Kogan was a Soviet violinist. Born in Yekaterinoslav (now Dnipro) in the Ukrainian SSR, he studied at the Central Music School and Moscow Conservatory before making his official debut in 1941. He won first prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 1951 and later joined the teaching staff of the Moscow Conservatory.
Kogan appeared as the concert violinist in Éric Rohmer's My Night at Maud's (1969). He also featured in the television mini-series Nicolo Paganini (1982). Among his honours were the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1964 and the Lenin Prize in 1965. He died in Mytishchi, near Moscow, in 1982.
