Biography
Levko Revutsky (also credited as Lev Revutskyi or L. Revutsky) was a Ukrainian Soviet composer, pedagogue and musical public figure. Born on 20 February 1889 in Irzhavets in the Poltava province of the Russian Empire (now Chernihiv Oblast, Ukraine), he died on 30 March 1977 in Kyiv.
He taught at the Mykola Lysenko Music and Drama Institute in Kyiv from 1924 and later became professor and head of the composition department at the Kyiv Conservatory. Revutsky composed the original score for Oleksandr Dovzhenko’s silent film Earth (1930), also known as Zemlya, and for Stepovi pisni (1934). His wider output includes two symphonies, a piano concerto, choral works and numerous arrangements of Ukrainian folk songs.
Revutsky received the title of People’s Artist of the USSR in 1944 and Hero of Socialist Labour in 1969, among other honours.
