Biography
Lila Avilés is a Mexican film director, screenwriter and producer. She studied performing arts, stage direction and film scriptwriting, and worked as an actress in television series before making her directorial debut with the short film Déjà vu in 2016.
Her first feature, The Chambermaid (La camarista, 2019), premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was selected as Mexico’s entry for the Academy Awards and Goya Awards. It won the Ariel Award for Best First Feature. Her second feature, Tótem (2023), which she also wrote, premiered in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Ecumenical Prize, and was chosen to represent Mexico at the Academy Awards.
