Biography
Lionel Salem was a French actor. Born Léon Salem in Salonique in the Ottoman Empire on 17 April 1883, he later worked as a commissionnaire-exportateur in luxury hosiery before entering the film industry.
He appeared in a number of French films during the 1920s and 1930s, including La Fille de l'eau (1924) directed by Jean Renoir, several films by Julien Duvivier and others, and as the Duke of Blangis in Luis Buñuel's L'Âge d'or (1930). A Freemason, he was arrested under Vichy anti-Jewish laws, interned at Drancy, and deported to Auschwitz, where he died on 3 October 1942.
