Biography
Lock Martin (1916–1959) was an American actor known for his height, which resulted from gigantism. He appeared as the robot Gort in the science-fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). He was born Joseph Lockard Martin Jr. in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Martin worked in various jobs before and alongside his film career, including as a doorman at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles and performing with Spike Jones and His City Slickers. His other screen credits include uncredited roles as a giant in Anchors Aweigh (1945) and Lady on a Train (1945), a mutant in Invaders from Mars (1953), and a giant (scenes deleted) in The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957). He also hosted a local Los Angeles children's television programme called The Gentle Giant.
