Biography

Loring Mandel was an American playwright and screenwriter. Born in Chicago on 5 May 1928, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1949 and served in the Korean War before moving to New York to begin his writing career.

He wrote for CBS anthology series including Studio One in Hollywood and Playhouse 90, as well as the daytime serial Love of Life. His feature film screenplays include Countdown (1967), Promises in the Dark (1979) and The Little Drummer Girl (1984). He also adapted Allen Drury’s novel Advise & Consent for the stage.

Mandel’s best-known work was the 2001 television film Conspiracy, for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing. He received two Emmys in total, along with Writers Guild of America awards and the guild’s Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for lifetime achievement in 2004. He died on 24 March 2020 in Lenox, Massachusetts.
