Biography
Loung Ung is a Cambodian-American writer and activist. She co-wrote the screenplay for the 2017 film First They Killed My Father, directed by Angelina Jolie and adapted from her memoir of the same title.
Born in Phnom Penh in 1970, Ung survived the Khmer Rouge regime before moving to the United States as a refugee in 1980. Her debut book, First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers (2000), describes her childhood experiences. She has written two further memoirs and served as national spokesperson for the Campaign for a Landmine-Free World from 1997 to 2005.
