Biography
Lula Carvalho is a Brazilian cinematographer. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1977, he is the son of cinematographer Walter Carvalho. He began working in the camera department as a child, loading film magazines at the age of ten, and later served as a first assistant camera and focus puller on numerous Brazilian features, including City of God (2002), Behind the Sun (2001) and Carandiru (2003).
Carvalho shot his first feature as director of photography on Incuráveis (2005). He is known for his work on Elite Squad (2007) and its sequel (2010), both directed by José Padilha, as well as the American productions RoboCop (2014) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014), followed by the 2016 sequel. He joined the American Society of Cinematographers in 2022.
