Biography
Magdeleine Bérubet was a French actress and playwright. Born Lucienne Madeleine Anne Marie Bérubet in Clermont-Ferrand on 18 July 1884, she studied singing and cello before turning to theatre. She began her professional stage career in the 1920s, appearing in productions directed by Charles Dullin and Louis Jouvet, including the 1923 premiere of Knock ou le Triomphe de la médecine.
She wrote plays such as La communion des Saints, staged by Georges Pitoëff in 1928. Bérubet entered cinema with the advent of sound films and played Adèle Legrand, the wife of Michel Simon’s character, in Jean Renoir’s La Chienne (1931). She appeared in further films including Crime and Punishment (1935) and later television series such as Les Cinq Dernières Minutes.
During the Second World War she returned to Clermont-Ferrand, where she taught drama at the conservatoire until 1958. She continued occasional stage work in Paris into the early 1960s and died in her birthplace on 24 July 1970.
