Biography
Manuel 'Jacaré' Olimpio Meira was a Brazilian fisherman and jangadeiro from Cascavel, Ceará. In 1941 he was one of four men who sailed the raft São Pedro from Fortaleza to Rio de Janeiro to petition President Getúlio Vargas for improved rights and conditions for artisanal fishermen.
Meira appeared as himself in footage shot by Orson Welles for the unfinished 1942 film It's All True. The material was later incorporated into the 1993 documentary It's All True: Based on an Unfinished Film by Orson Welles. He died in a drowning accident off Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, on 19 May 1942 during further filming.
