Biography
Marcel Carné (1906–1996) was a French film director associated with the poetic realism movement. He began his career as a film critic for publications including Hebdo-Films, Cinémagazine and Cinémonde, and worked as a camera assistant and assistant director to Jacques Feyder on several films.
Carné's first short film was the documentary Nogent, Eldorado du dimanche (1929). His feature debut was Jenny (1936), which began a long collaboration with screenwriter Jacques Prévert. Their partnership produced several notable films of the late 1930s and 1940s, including Port of Shadows (1938), Daybreak (1939) and Children of Paradise (1945). Carné continued directing until the 1970s.
